PROJECTS INFORMATION

This page serves as the central source for updates on the various projects happening within the City of Linden.

Projects will be updated as information becomes available.

Genesee County Water Connection Project

The county connection to the City of Linden water system was completed on April 29, 2025. This connection changed our municipal water system from a groundwater supply to a surface water supply. This change in water source will significantly reduce the mineral content “hardness” of the water and should eliminate the need for private water softeners in most cases. Based on this change, we recommend that residents place their water softeners in the bypass position to determine if the new water supply meets their needs without additional treatment.

In addition to water quality improvements, residents should start noticing an increase in water pressure. Based on current data, system pressures have increased 7-12 psi throughout the community. The city plans to continue making incremental increases until satisfactory pressures are reached.

Lindenwood Neighborhood Project

Work in the Lindenwood neighborhood has been substantially completed. The project included the installation of new water mains, significant curb and gutter replacement, drainage improvements, and new asphalt roadways. City staff and engineers are now working with the contractor to complete miscellaneous “punch-list” items to complete the project

West Rolston Road Repaving Project

Linden Mills Rehabilitation & Redevelopment Project

The City continues to work with our architectural partner, H2A Architects, and project manager Cunningham Limp on the project! This project has been made possible thanks to a grant received from the State of Michigan to fund critical improvements to this historic treasure. These improvements address structural, life-safety, facility and accessibility issues. The rehabilitation activities will include repair and painting of the exterior wood siding, replacement of non-historic windows and rehabilitation of historic windows. Work will also include a new insulated roof, interior structural repairs, replacement of porch foundation wall and porch slab, and repointing of the stone foundation. The project will include an addition to the west side of the building to accommodate a new elevator and fire stairs, ADA restrooms on each floor, as well as ADA enhancements to porch and surrounding footprint. Exterior improvements include new steps, stair replacement, a loading/unloading area, dumpster enclosure with screening walls and gate, transformer pad and mechanical equipment area with wood fence, improved storm sewer infrastructure, bike rack and additional improvements. All of these improvements have progressed through necessary City Boards and Commissions. All decisions were made mindfully with the common goal “to preserve materials, features and form, to create balance between compatibility and differentiation; in adherence with historic building design guidelines and the Secretary of Interior Standards for  Rehabilitation,” stated by Jackie Hoist of H2A, as not to jeopardize National Historic Registry status. City staff and engineers are currently working with the State to design and install a temporary cofferdam, which will facilitate structural foundation repairs and the installation of new foundations for the addition. Once the cofferdam designs are completed and approved, the city will begin soliciting bids for the entire project. The project is also currently pending EGLE permits that are required for the foundation work.

At the May 12, 2025 meeting, City Council voted to extend an offer to the Historical Society and Genesee District Library to return to the building!  The museum will occupy the fourth floor, the library the first floor with options of activities and events in the new community/flex space in the basement. The third floor will remain vacant while it is actively advertised as a lease opportunity for commercial use. Stay tuned for updates!

The Mill Building Rehabilitation and Addition Project is expected to break ground this fall. The goal of the project is the complete preservation and renovation of the entire building from the foundation up. The project will meticulously stabilize and restore the existing structure to last for many more years. Additionally, the project will include the construction of an addition on the west end to provide space for a second stairwell, public restrooms, and an elevator to serve all four floors. These improvements will bring the Mill Building into modern code compliance and provide ADA access to the entire building. The project is expected to take approximately one year to complete.

ADA Amphitheater and Gazebo Overlook

The City of Linden is currently reviewing bids for the installation of an ADA compliant platform overlooking the amphitheater and gazebo at Kimble-Sharp Gazebo Park. If approved, the project will provide a safe viewing space for visitors that are unable to navigate the stairs and walkways into the amphitheater. Construction is expected to occur this fall or early spring.

Loose Annex Remodel Project

Starting in the fall of 2025, the south wing of the Loose Center, commonly referred to as the “annex” will be undergoing a major remodel. The project will include minor construction modifications to improve functionality of the space, new floor finishes, lighting and ceiling upgrades, bathroom improvements, and painting for the entire space. The project should be completed this winter.

W. Broad Street Rehabilitation

The City of Linden is working with the State of Michigan to schedule a road rehabilitation project on E. Broad Street from N. Bridge to Ripley Road. The project will include a mechanical milling and asphalt overlay of the entire roadway, maintenance, and/or reconstruction of underground structures as needed, and ADA improvements to sidewalk ramps and pedestrian crossings. There is an outside chance that the project may begin this fall, but indications are it will have a spring of 2026 start.

Emergency Standby Generators

City Council recently approved the purchase and installation of emergency standby generators for the Rolston Road and Byram Lake sewer lift stations. These generators will ensure that the stations have continuous power even during power outages. Emergency generators for our two remaining stations are planned in 2025.

Safe Routes to School Project

The Safe Routes to School Project for Hyatt Lane and Stan Eaton Drive is scheduled to begin this fall. The goal of the project is to provide safe walkway connections to Hyatt Elementary from Hyatt Lane to W. Broad Street, and along Stan Eaton Drive to S. Bridge Street. Work is expected to begin this fall and conclude in the spring.

Underground Fiber Project

Surf Internet is currently in the process of installing underground internet fiber throughout the city for residential connection. The installation is complete is several areas of the community and will continue to be installed in remaining areas throughout the construction season. Storm Drain Clean Up

Did you know that the storm drains found in our roads, parking lots and yards drain directly into our local lakes and rivers? Storm drain systems are designed to quickly remove excess water runoff to prevent areas from flooding. However, this draining process also allows other foreign objects access to our waterways. How can you help? Take the time to clean up any excess yard fertilizer, grass clippings, leaves, trash and other pollutants from storm drain covers. Take precautions to prevent any soaps, oils, grease, dog waste or other contaminants from entering the storm system. These little efforts will help ensure the only thing entering our surface waters is rainwater!
